“Bridge ready on White Oak early in Oct.” 1960 – George Brich, Valley Times Collection (Order Number 109329) The White Oak Avenue Bridge, completed in 1960, crosses the Los Angeles River at the western edge of the Sepulveda Basin, a 2000-acre public open space and flood control system at the juncture of the 101 and the 405. Published in the Valley Times on September 27, 1960, this photograph shows 15-year-old Larry Babyak as he “checks progress”. He would later fight in the Vietnam War, losing his life while serving in 1969.
