Balcony gardening revival

The last few weeks have been about re-starting my balcony garden. When I moved house a few years ago, I got caught up in other priorities and never got a proper balcony gardening happening. The main obstacle for me was that buying all the components from a hardware mega-store  (potting soil, mulch, compost, etc) seemed to counteract the goodness of growing food. […]

Camera captures

I’m still in search of a good word for the act of photography. ‘Taking photos’ sounds as little thieving, and ‘making photos’ is at least a little bit pretentious. Whatever I call it, I’ve been doing a little lately, and here are a few of my favourites. There’s plenty more at my Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tillymarie/. I would love to know what you think.

Microgreens

Apparently microgreens are the new sprout. To see what it’s all about, I’ve started growing some. Here’s what I’ve been up to: Growing Medium: Made a soil mix of (no idea about quantities, must remember to write stuff down) coconut peat, seed raising mix, compost, and innoculated biochar (with natrakelp and worm juice). My reading suggests you […]

I embrace sprouting for a while and then it tends to become cumbersome, I tend to become negligent, sprouts tend to moulder into a stinky mess…and I wander dejectedly away from sprouting for a couple of years. Right now I’m in another sprouting golden age. They’re growing well, I crave […]

Recovery, food miles and a little place called Dagun

Shopped at the most inspiring little market yesterday, in a tiny Mary Valley town called Dagun. This market is a testament to community resilience, re-emerging as it has from the distraction, exhaustion and trauma that ravished the Mary Valley during the Queensland Government’s campaign to submerge it under a mega-dam in the mid-2000s. You can see more about those years by clicking here. The […]

Weaving waste

My second weaving project is complete (I made the first practice run from cat’s claw creeper). It’s a basket for the kitchen sink, made of discarded electrical wire from the grocery store in my childhood home town. Working with this “waste” material has helped me to reflect on the abundance of trash that daily life creates, and that the ease of […]
